Author's Note for Gilda And Meek #16 "Warlocks: Beyond Reality: Part Two: The Task" (Un-Iverse #28)

"Popularity is how uncool people measure coolness," is an essential Bernadette line and her confrontation with Gilda in this issue is an essential part of their arc. Gilda doesn't seem to understand part of the reason Bernadette is so angry is because she likes Gilda more than wants to, for reasons she doesn't understand. And Gilda's lack of adult / child boundaries feed into that.

My favorite Gilda / Bernadette moment is when they are arguing about the word "fool" and Gilda is downplaying people who say it as supervillains and rappers, and Bernadette's reminds the reader Gilda herself said it. And when Gilda says "It sounded hardcore at the time," my favorite Bernadette moment of the issue is she says, "It really didn't. This is why you need me." That's their relationship in a nutshell. It's both such a funny thing for Bernadette to say, and shockingly down-to-Earth too.

The idea of the Firepit Guardian is that she is both completely benevolent and utterly bloodthirsty at the same time. She radiates goodness and compassion to Gilda. But she always needs a random murder to get going. And the thing I love about that is her radiance isn't a mask to hide her true bloodthirstiness. Both things are genuine and an equal part of her, which is a HELL of a weird way to tell a story and a HELL of a weird way to portray a virtuous character. But it's my story and I can write it how I like. Bite me.

You may think Meek's tasks of creating the satchel out of the vines' skin, and using the fruits to carry water one-handed is a stretch, but scenes like this are precisely the reason I gave Meek surprisingly good hand-eye coordination. While he has it, it's believable he could pull this off.
