Author's Note for UnComix! Tales: The Terran Wars: Chapter One "The World Savior Massacre" (Un-Iverse #72)
Do you trust me?
Big ask, but this IS the tone of the rest of the saga. Bad things are going to happen. Those Spoiler Quotes this issue are especially upsetting. But I want you to understand something about all of the bad things that are going to happen to people we love.
This isn't a punishment for the reader. The reader did nothing wrong. The bad things happen the way they do because they make the GOOD things matter all that much MORE.
And I'm ALL about the good things. Rewarding the reader. But you are going to be challenged along the way. Maybe even angered. But I made a promise to you to NEVER do you dirty and I intend to honor it.
Do you trust me? I'm a storyteller so you really shouldn't. But I'm letting you know up-front you CAN. I won't do you dirty. Ever. I swear.
I predict at some point, the reader is going to look up at me in anger, giving me Bernadette Anderson-level side-eye. They'll grit their teeth and say something to me.
"Tell me something, Matt. Tell me you and the saga are Worth It. Tell me the anger and pain I am currently feeling is something that makes the entire story feel satisfying and Worth It by the time this all ends for real. Tell me you and the story are Worth It."
We are Worth It.
I promise.
I promise, I promise, I promise.
While I'm on the subject of artistic unfairness, there is a paradox built into Infinitesimal Microbe's prophecy about the largest Werewolf on Earth prophesized to kill the leader of the alien invaders, Killing Microbe is foolish because it doesn't actually prevent that prophecy. It just shifts its terms to the next largest Werewolf.
Were you getting big Juan Howler dreams there? Don't. Aside from him not REMOTELY being even NEAR the next-largest Werewolf on Earth, the reason I would do that at all is if the paradox interested me. And the paradox only exists if the prophecy is true. And in The Un-Iverse prophecies are usually (if not always) b.s.. So the paradox doesn't remotely interest me.
For me, I think the most tragic aspect of The World Savior Massacre is that considering it's done to foil prophecies, and prophecies are (mostly) unpredictable bullshit, all of this horror and bloodshed is happening for no damn good reason at all. It's essentially the thing that instigates The Terran Wars, and yet it is entirely stupid and pointless. As most of the evil in the saga is portrayed as.
What is the deal with Donna Demented and the strip club dumpster?
The idea behind that is that the Warlocks' Council always hides the back door to the Council Chamber on Earth in the last place a person would want to go. The bottom of a used condom-filled dumpster behind a Vegas strip club being the secret hiding place for their portal on Earth is what it is for that reason. Before this, I theorize the entrance was placed at the bottom of a hogshit silo.
I love that there exists something too disgusting for Donna Demented. Hearing the hooded figure complain about how gross this is automatically makes you think it isn't her.
