How I Write (Or How To Get Past That Daunting Blank First Page)

Image
Do you REALLY want to write something? A short story, a screenplay, or a novel? Is the first blank page intimidating you? One of the most crushing things about writing in my youth was the fact that I had so many neat ideas that I never could get to because I didn't have the skills or patience to sit down and write a proper story for the length needed to actually get to these ideas. And I think that's what writer's block is for many people. You have the idea but not the narrative you need to get to explore the idea.  What I'm going to suggest next is not in any writer's course I've ever seen. I also want to suggest that if it doesn't work for you, that's fine. The following essay is the best advice I can give. The second best advice I can give is that if this doesn't work for you, figure out something else.  When it comes to telling a story I could never just sit down and do it. I've gotten better at that over the years, but mainly because this ne

About Me

My name is Matt Zimmer. I was born in 1975. I live in Framingham, Massachusetts. I created Gilda when I was in the first grade and this mess just took off from there.  My favorite comic strips and books are Bone by Jeff Smith, Uncle Scrooge and Donald Duck by Carl Barks and Don Rosa, Calvin & Hobbes by Bill Watterson, and Bloom County by Berkeley Breathed.  My favorite animated series are Justice League Unlimited, The Simpsons, Mighty Mouse: The New Adventures, and She-Ra And The Princesses Of Power. Favorite live-action series are Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Twin Peaks, Farscape, Sesame Street, and The Orville.  Favorite Movies is a loaded question: But the two I keep coming back to are Who Framed Roger Rabbit and Fantasia. Easy answers.  For books I am a big Stephen King fan. I also used to be way into Harry Potter before... well... you know.  For music, I like listening mostly to Soundtracks from movies and musicals.  I love Christmas. Not as much as Gilda does, but nobody does.

Other Artists I Like

Here are some links to artwork for other artists I like, mostly that I have met through the animation forum Anime Superhero.  Gatordragon is a personal hero of mine. His Bounty Fools characters are something I love and dig. I can't wait to see the story someday. Here is his Instagram page:  Gatordragon PalkAaron2002 does a lot of neat and colorful media banners. They look terrific and eyepopping. His Deviant Art Page is PalkAaron2002 Samuel Edme has a very cool and unusual web strip out called The Shapes. Check out his Tapas and Webtoon pages (linked below) Sam The Cartoonist's The Shapes at Tapas Sam The Cartoonist's The Shapes At Webtoons I love RandomMe Arts. His Mermen obsession never fails to make me smile. His drawings are super appealing to me.  RandomMe Arts My friend Nana Kumi-Amankwah has a GREAT webcomic called "Lil' Hero Artists". The artwork would be amazing enough for me to recommend if it the story sucked, but it doesn't. The whole thing is

And finally, a place for the worst thing on the site. This is the First Edition of Gilda And Meek "Groundwork" in all its shame and ignominy. If you do NOT hate me or yourselves, you may skip this utter piece of hogshit (pardon my Gragnock). If you want to see my process (warts and all), and the progressions I have made in both story and artwork over the years, here it is. I am deeply shamed. Ick.  -1. Gilda And Meek "Groundwork" First Edition (Un-Iverse #-1)  Rating: PG-13. (Some bloody violence and drug use).   June 29, 2021 Postscript The thing that makes me cringe most about the First Edition of Groundwork? Besides the crappy artwork and visible hand-drawn lettering behind the pasted printed lettering? That hokey Narrator's Note at the beginning explaining meta jokes and humor to the reader. It's like, "No shit, Sherlock." Or more accurately, "Yes, Ted, that was the joke."  In my defense, I only planned to share Gilda And Meek with a
